Before starting this paper my experiences of HPE was mainly the PE, not so much of the H. So it has been an eye opener in regards to what goes into this part of the curriculum. But like other aspects of the curriculum each child/student brings their own experiences, knowledge and ideals and values and it is up to me to help guide them to being a 'healthy citizen' as per Tinning & McCuaig (2006). By incorporating the Whare Tapa Wha model into this as well, looking at not only the physical but the social, spiritual and mental-emotional aspects of well being. This will hopefully help guide my students to being 'healthy citizens'.
2. Can you describe your emerging identity as a teacher of HPE?
For me I have always loved being involved, both participating, coaching or leading the Physical Education side of HPE, if I don't know the sport it doesn't take too long to know how it works and the rules, its like a new challenge. And this is part and parcel of teaching, you will never know everything, you should learn and evolve and grow with each year and each group of children you teach. The Health side of my HPE teaching identity still has a way to go, until a few weeks ago I wasn't quite aware of the different health areas of HPE like Mental Health, Body Care & Physical Safety and Sex Education. It is a little daunting to not be as confident in this area as the PE side, but it will come with experience and getting into my class and units.
3. What are the areas needing attention for you to become a quality teacher of HPE?
As stated above I feel that the Health aspect of HPE and how to incorporate this into lessons. Its quite daunting when you think how you are going to teach Sex Education to 5 year old's just as much as for 11 year old's. The other aspect is behaviour management, especially when you are out of your normal classroom environment.

I agree that teaching sex education to young students is just as daunting as teaching older students. It seems that our generation missed out on the health side of HPE so will be nice for us as teachers to ensure that younger generations are more exposed to it.
ReplyDeleteOh guys you really missed out having health education at school! I honestly loved it, but I always remember being taught it by someone other than my teacher, such as Harold the Giraffe (Life education van). This would certainly have taken the pressure of teachers and was definitely useful for us as students because the people teaching us were very experienced. I wonder we will have these services available when we are teaching, I guess it will depend on the school.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that wherever you end up Chloe you will gain confidence in teaching health, I can only imagine the fun your class will have!
I agree that the H aspects of HPE are a duanting challenge. I do believe that you like your ability to pick up new PE games easily, that you will also pick up the H aspects of HPE with super ease.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking blog Chloe and a very useful tool for other teachers to access for information.
